The first Battle of Flowers parade took place in San Antonio on April 24, 1891 to commemorate the anniversary of the Battle of San Jacinto. Based on a tradition from Spain, participants threw flowers from horse-drawn carriages in a mock battle. Currently, the parade is produced by the Battle of Flowers Association, a non-profit women's organization based in San Antonio, Texas.
